Practitioner Guidance

The video work is a form of restorative justice (RJ) where the young person and the parent or carer get to share their perspectives. The video ensures that each side has an opportunity to really listen and be listened to. A systematic review published by the Government found that RJ can reduce the frequency of offending by 14% and increase victim satisfaction by 85%1.  An independent evaluation of RYPP work found that families consistently reported the video work as being one of the most effective techniques in helping them move forward. It is important to use the visual medium of video to do the work. The video creates enough distance to ensure that each side will actually listen to the other person, but it also ensures that both parties can see each other fully. This is extremely important when working with families who are in conflict, as they need to be able to see each other’s body language to decrease the chance of misunderstandings. Doing the video work via other modes of communication is likely to significantly reduce its effectiveness. This video step 1 is an opportunity for the young person to get used to working with video in preparation for the restorative conversation that starts later, in YP5.
