- Identify unhelpful patterns
- Identify any further drivers for abuse (how does it work for the young person?)
In this session you will demonstrate how to use a technique known as sequence analysis, to explore abusive incidents in detail. Being able to slow an incident down, helps us to unpick things that were helpful and identify things that could be done differently, going forward. It’s like creating an action replay of a situation so you can analyse it, look at what was happening in the lead up and what happened post incident. You will use the resource ‘Jason’s Story’ to help the parent practice completing a sequence analysis on Jason’s family first. The parent will find the process much easier to complete on a neutral family first and once this is practised, they can move on to exploring their own family’s incidents in more detail and with less shame. Exploring the abusive incidents in this way will help the parent to identify ‘quick wins’ and changes they can be making now, but it will also provide the detail needed to ensure the correct behaviours are addressed in the family agreement session. This is when you bring the family together again in F2 (week 4) to make the rewards and consequences agreement. The focus should be identifying risky and unsafe behaviours. Things that are just troublesome or annoying don’t need to be included.
