Practitioner Guidance
This exercise is designed to help the parent really think about what they would like to change. The first step to problem solving is thorough evaluation of the problem. When the parent is discussing the problem behaviours it is useful to gently steer the conversation towards the unsafe behaviours. If the parent brings up many other issues, the situation will quickly seem unmanageable and overwhelming. It is important that you do this in a subtle manner and the parent still feels that they are being validated and listened to. If the parent is finding it difficult to think of things, you can show them the example of Jason and the things his parent might have written as problem areas to solve.
