Practitioner Guidance

Some things to consider when establishing and explaining your confidentiality policy for work with YP.

It is best to be very concrete about your policy as regards confidentiality. Below is an example of how that might sound. Some of the issues you will see are real dilemmas and you might very well not share these exact rules. For example, if your agency is essentially a criminal justice-based one, then you may not be able to hold any information about crimes as confidential. Other agencies may allow themselves to be guided by national safeguarding guidance whereby they report only the issues that potentially relate to significant harm of a minor or imminent severe injury to an adult.
